Arm a Preset Once and Every Gold Trade Goes In Fully Managed
I bet you didn't know your MT5 account could do this. You tap buy on gold once, and the trade goes in with a stop, five take-profits that each bank a slice, a stop that jumps to entry when the first target fills, and a trail that follows price after that. Then you put the phone in your pocket and all of it keeps running. That isn't the MetaTrader app. It's Trade By Focus, signed in with the same MT5 login you already use, working as an MT5 trade presets app on top of your normal broker account.
Most people think the MetaTrader app is the account. It isn't. It's one window onto it, and a fairly bare window at that.
What the MetaTrader app gives you on a gold entry
To be fair to MetaTrader, it does the basics well. You can place a market or pending order, type in one stop loss and one take-profit, and set a trailing stop. That's where it stops. You get a single TP, so you either bank everything at one level or nothing at all. There's no partial close unless you sit there and do it by hand. The trailing stop runs in the terminal, so on your phone it only works while the app has a live connection. Lock the screen on the train and it's not doing much.
On XAUUSD that's a real problem. Gold at the London open (08:00 UTC) or into the New York open (13:30 UTC) can move $10 in a few minutes and then give most of it back. If your only exit is one TP far away, you watch a good trade turn into a scratch. If it's one TP close in, you bank crumbs and miss the leg. I learned this the slow way after closing a gold long by hand at a tenner in profit, then watching it run another thirty dollars while I was making a brew.
Building a gold preset in the MT5 trade presets app
A preset in Trade By Focus is a saved trade plan for one pair. You build it once and it carries everything a trade needs. Here's the sort of thing I'd set up for gold, just to show the moving parts. Your own numbers should come from your own testing and account size.
Lot size comes first: say 0.20. The stop sits $6 from entry. Then the take-profit ladder, which is where it gets interesting, because you get up to five levels and choose how much of the position closes at each one.
| Level | Distance from entry | Closes |
|---|---|---|
| TP1 | $3 | 30% |
| TP2 | $6 | 25% |
| TP3 | $9 | 20% |
| TP4 | $12 | 15% |
| TP5 | $18 | 10% |
Auto-breakeven goes on at TP1. The moment that first slice banks, the stop moves to your entry price and the rest of the trade can't turn into a loser. If you'd rather, you can have it cascade, so the stop steps up to TP1 when TP2 fills, to TP2 when TP3 fills, and so on up the ladder.
The trailing stop is the last piece. You can start it at any of TP1-TP4, at breakeven, or once a set amount of profit is banked. For gold I like starting it at TP2, so the early chop doesn't shake the runner out, but the back end of the trade still follows a proper move.
You can save five presets per pair. I'd keep a tight one for the London open spike, a wider one for the New York session, and one for the days you just want to scalp a level on M5.
Arming it on XAUUSD
Saving a preset doesn't do anything on its own. Arming it does. You pick the preset on the XAUUSD screen and mark it armed, and from then on every new gold trade you place goes in with that full plan attached. Market order, limit or stop, it doesn't matter. One tap.
Say gold's been ranging under a level all Asian session and you want a buy stop just above it for the London break. You drop the pending order on the live chart, drag it to the price you want, and confirm. The stop and all five targets appear as lines on the chart straight away, and you can drag any of them if you've changed your mind. When price triggers the order, the trade is already managed. You don't open anything else or set anything else. That's the bit most people don't realise their account can do.
What happens with the phone in your pocket
This is the part that matters. The exits don't run on your phone. They run on Trade By Focus servers, connected to your MT5 account through a hosted session. Your phone is just the remote.
So gold breaks out, and TP1 fills while you're on the school run. 30% of the position closes and the stop moves to entry. A push notification tells you. TP2 fills twenty minutes later, another 25% comes off, and the trail starts following price. If gold then rolls over hard (and it will, sometimes), the trail catches it and you're out with the first two slices banked and the rest closed in profit. If it keeps going, TP3, TP4 and TP5 bank in turn. Either way, nobody had to be looking at a screen.
It keeps working if the phone's locked, flat, or somewhere with no signal. No VPS to rent, nothing to install, nothing to leave running at your end.
Changing your mind on an open trade
Presets aren't a cage. Open any live trade and the Manage panel shows the whole plan: stop, each TP and its close percentage, breakeven rule, trail. Change any of it and the servers pick up the new plan. If US CPI is due at 12:30 UTC and you don't fancy holding a runner through it, pull TP3 in closer or tighten the trail before the number drops. If you need out of everything at once, Emergency Close All flattens the account in one tap.
Why a preset changes how you trade gold
The quiet benefit is consistency. When every trade goes in with the same exits, your results stop depending on how brave you felt at the time. You're not closing early because you got nervous, or moving the stop because you "had a feeling". The Journal picks up every closed trade anyway, so after a few weeks you can see whether your TP1 at $3 is getting hit often enough, or whether the runner at TP5 ever actually pays. Trade Replay will play any of them back bar by bar with the entry, stop and targets drawn on, which is a sobering way to find out your stop's too tight for gold's usual noise.
If you want gold trades that come off the back of a zone rather than a single price, there's a separate write-up on splitting one trade into staggered entries. The same preset can sit behind those too.
