MT5 Mobile vs Trade By Focus: A Hands-On, Feature-by-Feature Comparison
mt5 mobile vs trade by focus — what actually matters
The official MetaTrader 5 mobile app is free, it works with every broker, and millions of traders use it every day. That's the baseline. But if you've spent any time actually trying to manage a live position from your phone — setting a partial close at TP1, checking what news is due before you enter, reviewing why last week's trades went wrong — you'll know the baseline isn't always enough. This is a straight comparison between the two. No spin. Where the official app is genuinely better, I'll say so.
order placement and trade management UX
The MT5 mobile app lets you place market orders and pending orders. It's functional. But once you're in a trade, the tools thin out fast. Moving your stop manually, setting a take-profit, adjusting lot size — each one is a separate tap-through on a form that wasn't designed for small screens.
Trade By Focus approaches this differently. Before you enter, you set your full exit plan: up to five take-profit levels, auto-breakeven that triggers the moment TP1 is hit, and a trailing stop you can start at any point along that ladder. Then you enter. The hosted engine runs the rest on Trade By Focus's servers — not on your phone, not on a VPS you're paying for separately, not on a laptop you forgot to leave on. Your phone can be face-down on the kitchen counter and TP2 will still fire when price gets there.
For the order entry itself, position sizing is built in. You set your risk in pips or percentage, the calculator does the lot size. The MT5 app has nothing equivalent — you're working it out yourself or tabbing to a separate app.
partial close
The official MT5 mobile app doesn't have a one-tap partial close. You have to open the position, enter a partial lot manually, and confirm. It works, but it's fiddly under pressure — exactly when you need it to be quick.
Trade By Focus's five-level TP ladder handles this automatically. Set TP1 to close 25% of your position, TP2 to close another 30%, and the rest trails to wherever you want. You don't touch the phone again. If you want a quick manual partial exit mid-trade, that's also there — one-tap partial closes are covered properly here. But for planned, structured exits, the ladder removes the need entirely.
news filter
The MT5 mobile app has no news blackout feature. Nothing that pauses your strategy before a high-impact event. You either watch the calendar yourself or you get caught.
Trade By Focus has a configurable news-blackout auto-pause. You pick which currencies matter to your open trades, set the impact threshold (high, medium), and set how many minutes before and after the event you want everything to go quiet. When NFP drops on a Friday at 13:30 UTC, if you've configured a USD blackout, new entries stop automatically. Existing positions stay open — you control those — but the system won't open fresh ones while the market's about to lurch twenty pips in either direction.
I learned why this matters the slow way. Sat with a GBPUSD long open through a surprise BoE commentary drop, watched it rip through my stop in about four seconds. The news was on the calendar. I just hadn't checked.
journaling
The MT5 mobile app keeps a trade history. Dates, instruments, entry, exit, profit or loss. That's it. There's no analysis, no pattern recognition, no way to understand why you're making the same mistakes on Fridays.
Trade By Focus auto-imports your full closed-trade history the moment you connect your broker account. From there the journal gives you win rate, profit factor, a six-axis Focus Score, a calendar heatmap showing your best and worst days, and breakdowns by session, symbol, and day of week. Smart Insights flags behavioural patterns — things like "your average loss on XAUUSD is 2.3x your average win" — before you've consciously spotted them. Trade Replay lets you play any closed trade back bar-by-bar, so you can actually study what you did and when.
The MT5 app logs trades. Trade By Focus analyses them. That's the real gap.
drawdown protection
MT5 mobile has no built-in drawdown protection. You can set stop-outs at the broker level, but there's nothing inside the app that says "you've lost X today, stop taking new trades".
Trade By Focus has a daily drawdown limit you set yourself. Breach it and the system pauses new entries automatically. There's also a max concurrent positions cap, per-pair pause and resume, and Emergency Close All — which flattens everything on a pair in one tap if something's going badly wrong. The drawdown auto-pause logic is explained in detail here. The short version: it's a rule you set once that enforces discipline you might not have in the moment.
AI coaching
The MT5 mobile app has no coaching layer. It processes orders. That's its job.
Trade By Focus has an AI trade coach built into the journal. It works from your actual trade history — not generic advice, not "trade with the trend" platitudes. It identifies where you're leaking edge. If you consistently overtrade between 12:00 and 13:00 UTC ahead of the New York open and your win rate drops 15 points in that window, Smart Insights will surface it. The coach gives you something to act on.
broker compatibility
Both work with any MT5 broker. No edge either way here. Trade By Focus connects via your existing account number and password — one-click, live in one or two minutes. Credentials are used to start the session and then discarded. Funds stay in your broker account throughout.
where the official MT5 app is still better
Full chart drawing tools. The MT5 desktop terminal has a deeper set of annotation tools — complex object types, precise multi-line labels, more granular object properties. The mobile app inherits some of that. Trade By Focus has a solid drawing toolbar (trend lines, fibs, pitchforks, position tools) and a full indicator suite, but if your whole process depends on heavily annotated chart templates you've built over years on the desktop, you'll feel the difference.
For most traders managing live trades from their phone, that gap won't matter much day-to-day. But it's real and it's worth saying.
the honest summary in one paragraph
The MT5 mobile app is a reliable order terminal. It places trades, shows your history, and gets out of your way. If that's all you need, it's fine. Trade By Focus is what you add when you want your exits automated, your drawdown managed, your news blackouts enforced, and your trading history actually analysed — all running on hosted servers that don't care whether your phone's online. The two aren't really competing for the same job.
