Semi Auto Trading on MT5 Confirmation Mode Gives You a 60-Second Window to Change Your Mind
Most traders assume their MT5 account is either manual or automatic. You either tap the button yourself, or you hand the wheel over completely and hope for the best. What very few people realise is that their MT5 account can sit in a third position: a semi auto trading mode where a strategy fires a signal, you get a 60-second window on your phone to approve or skip it, and if you do nothing, the trade goes in anyway. That's not a feature buried in the MetaTrader app. MetaTrader doesn't offer it. It's what Trade By Focus built on top of the account you already have.
Let's go through how it actually works, and why the 60-second countdown does something more useful than it first appears.
What the Automation Leaderboard is doing in the background
Trade By Focus has an Automation Leaderboard with around 900 ready-made strategies across gold, GBPUSD, USDJPY, Bitcoin, US30, US500, USTEC and GER40. Every one of those strategies is traded live on a demo account, with the full record published, losses included, ranked by real results over 7, 30, 90 days or all time. You pick one, set your lot size, add a news blackout if you want, and connect it to your account in a couple of taps.
When you add a strategy, you choose an execution mode. There are three: notify-only, semi-auto, and fully automatic.
Notify-only means the strategy fires a signal and you get a notification. That's it. Nothing trades unless you go in and place it yourself. It's useful for vetting a strategy before you commit, but you're still doing all the work.
Fully automatic means the strategy fires and the trade goes straight to your account, no prompt, no pause. It keeps running whether your phone is in your pocket, on the other side of the room, or in a different time zone. Trade By Focus runs on its own servers, so the connection is live regardless of what your phone is doing.
Semi-auto, the MT5 confirmation mode, sits between the two. The strategy fires, your phone gets a push notification, and you have 60 seconds to approve the trade or skip it. If you do neither, the trade is placed automatically when the countdown hits zero.
Why 60 seconds is the interesting part
When I first heard about this, I thought it sounded like a slightly slower version of doing it manually. What changed my mind was thinking about when the notification actually arrives.
Strategies don't fire at convenient moments. They fire during the London open at 08:00 UTC, or on a news spike at 13:30 UTC when NY comes in, or in the middle of whatever else you're doing. The 60-second window isn't really about giving you time to analyse the trade. You're not going to open TradingView, check correlations, and write notes in 60 seconds. What the window does is interrupt.
There's a specific kind of bad decision that comes from seeing a signal fire and immediately thinking "not this one, I know better". You've watched a strategy produce several solid entries. Then it fires on a setup that doesn't look right to you, and you skip it. That trade runs 80 pips in profit. The next one fires, looks questionable, you skip it again. Also a winner. By the time the third fires, you're half-convinced you're jinxing it by interfering.
That cycle is how discretionary overrides quietly wreck a strategy's edge. The 60-second countdown doesn't stop you overriding. If the setup is genuinely wrong, you should skip it; you're still the trader. But it creates a small pause between the impulse and the action. You see the notification, you have to actively decide, and the default if you do nothing is that the trade goes in. The burden of proof switches around. Instead of deciding to take the trade, you're deciding to reject it.
I learned this the slow way after spending three weeks manually skipping signals on a strategy I was supposed to be running automatically. The strategy finished the month in profit. My account, running the same signals with my own filter on top, did not.
How you actually set it up on your phone
You go into the Automation Leaderboard inside Trade By Focus, pick a strategy, and set the execution mode to semi-auto before you activate it. From that point, every time the strategy generates an entry signal, a notification hits your phone. Open it, and you see the pair, direction and the countdown ticking down. Tap approve and the trade goes immediately with the lot size and risk settings you configured. Tap skip and nothing trades. Leave it alone and the trade places itself when 60 seconds is up.
The trade that goes in isn't a basic market order. It carries your preset: your lot size, your stop, up to five take-profit levels with partial closes, auto-breakeven, and a trailing stop if you've set one. Everything that happens after entry runs on Trade By Focus's servers. You don't need the app open for it.
For a closer look at how fully automatic mode compares, there's more detail on when each setting makes sense.
The case for keeping yourself in the loop without actually interfering
Fully automatic is the right call when you genuinely trust the strategy and you know your own tendency to second-guess. Semi-auto works well when you're still building that trust, or when you trade pairs where news events can make an entry look fine by signal and terrible by context. A strategy running on GBPUSD won't automatically know that the Bank of England governor is speaking in 10 minutes. Your news blackout setting handles that to a point, but you might want to see the signal first during those windows.
Notify-only is worth running for a week or two when you add a new strategy from the leaderboard, just to watch how it behaves before any real money follows it. Then stepping up to semi-auto before going fully automatic is a reasonable progression.
The point is that these three modes exist because trading psychology is real and traders are not robots. The MetaTrader app gives you a button and expects you to decide. Trade By Focus added a layer between the signal and the execution, and that layer turns out to be where a lot of the damage usually happens.
