Semi-Auto Trading: The 60-Second Countdown That Keeps You in Control

The gap between manual and fully automated

Full automation sounds appealing until you've watched a bot confidently walk into a news spike that wasn't in the backtest. Full manual sounds disciplined until you've skipped three setups in a row because you weren't at your desk, then revenge-traded something sketchy at 11pm to compensate.

Semi automated forex trading exists in the gap between those two failure modes. The system finds the setup. You decide whether to take it. And you get exactly sixty seconds to make that call before the window closes.

That's not a compromise — it's the whole point.

What semi-auto actually means in Trade By Focus

Inside the Automations feature on Trade By Focus, every strategy you build can run in one of three modes: notify only, semi-auto, or fully automatic.

Notify-only means you get a push alert when conditions are met and then you do everything yourself. Fully automatic means the strategy trades without asking you anything. Semi-auto is the middle road: the strategy checks its conditions, decides an entry is valid, and then pings you with a countdown. You've got 60 seconds to tap Approve or Skip. If you don't respond, it bins the trade and waits for the next one.

The countdown itself matters. It's not just a notification sitting in your tray until you read it three hours later. It's a live timer — visible, ticking, requiring a decision. That pressure is deliberate. It stops you from hovering indefinitely, second-guessing the strategy you already validated in a backtest. You either trust the setup or you don't.

Building the strategy is no-code

You don't need to write a single line of MQL5. The Strategy Builder works from building blocks: EMA crossovers, RSI thresholds, MACD signals, Bollinger conditions, break-of-structure, specific candle patterns, time-of-day filters, even a news blackout that auto-pauses entries around high-impact events.

You stack the conditions that describe your edge. When price does X and RSI is below Y and it's between 08:00 and 11:00 UTC, fire the countdown.

Before you put it anywhere near a live account, you backtest it against roughly 30 days of real price data. The results come back as an equity curve with return, max drawdown, win rate, and profit factor — enough to tell you whether the logic holds or whether you've just curve-fitted noise.

I built one for gold last year that looked genuinely good on paper. Backtest said otherwise. Saved me several weeks of live testing and a fair bit of sleep.

Why the human veto is the feature, not a limitation

A lot of traders assume semi-auto is for people who haven't fully committed to automation yet. That's the wrong read.

There are real situations a backtest can't catch. You're watching price and it's forming a setup, but there's a central bank speech starting in 20 minutes that isn't in your news filter. Or the spread has gone wide on your broker. Or you can see on the chart that this particular move has already run 80% of its expected range. The strategy doesn't know those things. You do.

The 60-second countdown gives you the chance to act on that information without having to manage everything yourself. The strategy did the scanning, the filtering, the condition-checking — all the stuff that's genuinely boring and error-prone when done manually. You just make the final call.

For traders who already trade a rules-based approach, this is genuinely the closest thing to having your rules enforced for you while keeping the discretion that experience buys.

What it looks like in practice

Say you've built a London session scalper on EURUSD. Conditions: EMA9 crosses above EMA21, RSI is between 45 and 65 (not overextended), time is between 08:00 and 10:00 UTC, no high-impact EUR news within 30 minutes.

It's 08:43 UTC. Price has been consolidating since the open and the cross fires. All conditions pass. Your phone buzzes and the countdown starts.

You pull up the chart on Trade By Focus. You can see the setup. It looks clean. You tap Approve — and the trade goes in with whatever SL, TP, and risk parameters you set when you built the strategy, including the full TP ladder and auto-breakeven if you configured them.

Alternatively, you pull up the chart and you can see a big rejection wick forming on the 5-minute that the strategy couldn't factor in. You tap Skip. No trade. No regret. The system resets and watches for the next signal.

Sixty seconds is plenty for that decision. If you need more than sixty seconds, you either don't have a clear enough view or you're overthinking a setup that's already been validated.

Semi-auto pairs well with the journal

Every trade that goes through — approved or not, live or skipped — feeds into the auto-journal in Trade By Focus. Your approved trades get logged automatically with entry, exit, size, P&L, and session. Over time, you'll see whether your overrides are adding value or costing you.

That's the question worth asking honestly. Are the trades you skipped ones you should have taken? Are the ones you approved performing differently from the ones you'd have let run fully automatic? The journal gives you the data to answer that rather than guessing.

Smart Insights will flag it if it spots a pattern — say, you consistently skip setups on Fridays and those setups would have paid. That's not comfortable information, but it's useful.

Semi automated forex trading done properly

The appeal of semi automated forex trading is discipline without surrender. You're not staring at charts all session hoping to catch the signal manually. You're not handing everything to an algorithm and hoping it handles edge cases you haven't anticipated. You're doing both jobs — the system does the watching, you do the judging.

For traders who've tried full automation and found it unsettling, or tried full manual and found it unsustainable, the 60-second countdown is worth taking seriously as a long-term workflow rather than a stepping stone to something else.
