Use My Own SL/TP with a Telegram Signal Copier: How Preset Mode Actually Works
The problem with just copying someone else's levels
Signal groups are useful. Some of them are genuinely good at reading price. But useful and trustworthy aren't the same thing, and handing a signal provider full control over your stop placement is a different kind of risk than people usually think about.
Maybe their SL is too wide for your account size. Maybe they don't use trailing stops at all and you've watched winning trades hand back 80% of profit before final TP. Maybe their TP ladder just doesn't fit how you want to size out. Whatever the reason, the idea of using my own SL/TP with a Telegram signal copier instead of theirs isn't about distrusting the group — it's about keeping your own risk rules in charge.
That's exactly what Preset Mode in Trade By Focus is built around.
Two modes, two very different assumptions
Trade By Focus Signal Group Tasks give you two ways to follow a group. Understanding the difference matters before you pick one.
Follow Exactly does what it says. The signal comes in — pair, direction, entry, SL, TP — and Trade By Focus places the trade with those levels, as specified. If the group says 40-pip stop, you get a 40-pip stop. If they trail from TP2, you trail from TP2. You're running their risk management, not yours. This mode makes sense when you've vetted the provider thoroughly, their sizing logic works for your account, and you genuinely want to run their strategy as a whole system.
Preset Mode (the one most retail traders should probably be on by default) strips the signal back to two things: the pair and the direction. Everything else — your SL, your TP ladder, your breakeven trigger, your trailing stop — comes from settings you've already configured. The signal tells you what and which way. You've already decided the rest.
What 'preset' actually means in practice
Say you're following a gold signals group. A call comes in: XAUUSD, buy, entry at market, with their stop 35 pips below and a single take-profit target. In Follow Exactly mode, that's your trade. In Preset Mode, Trade By Focus reads the pair (XAUUSD) and the direction (buy) and then applies the template you've built.
Your template might look like this: SL at 1.5% of account, five TP levels staggered across your expected move, auto-breakeven triggering the moment TP1 hits, trailing stop activating from TP2. None of that came from the signal. All of it came from your settings. The group just told you which way gold was going.
This is what using my own SL/TP with a Telegram signal copier actually looks like in practice — not a workaround, a deliberate design choice.
The part that matters most: it runs on the server
I learned this the slow way after sitting at a desk watching a trade run past my mental trailing stop level because the app timed out and I'd forgotten to set it properly. Not ideal.
In Trade By Focus, the trailing stop and auto-breakeven don't run on your phone. They run server-side, on the hosted MT5 connection. Your phone can be off, locked, or in a dead zone — the engine is still watching the trade. When TP1 hits, breakeven moves automatically. When the trailing condition triggers, it trails. You don't have to be there.
This matters more than it sounds. A lot of signal groups call trades during London open (08:00 UTC) or New York open (13:30 UTC) when you might be commuting, in a meeting, or just not watching. If your risk management only runs when your app is open, it's not really running.
When to use each mode
Follow Exactly is the right call when you're using Signal Lab to vet a group and you've decided their full methodology — entry, SL, sizing, targets — is worth running as a package. Some providers are sophisticated enough that their stops are part of the edge. Overriding their SL with yours could actually make results worse.
Preset Mode is right when you've found a group with a decent read on direction and entry timing but you don't want to inherit their risk management wholesale. It's also useful if you follow more than one group and want a consistent risk framework across all of them — same SL logic, same TP ladder structure, same trailing behaviour — regardless of what each individual provider does.
You can also use Preset Mode as a way to copy signals while you're still building conviction in a group. Your risk rules cap your downside while you gather data. Signal Lab is running its own 30-day verdict in the background at the same time, so you're not flying blind.
A brief note on entry handling
Preset Mode inherits the same entry logic as any other Signal Group Task. If the group calls a single price, it becomes a pending order. If they give a range, it becomes a Range Watch zone on the chart — a draggable band that you can adjust before it fires. The preset settings kick in once the entry is triggered, not before. So the pair and direction come from the signal; everything from entry fill onwards is yours.
The SL/TP ladder in full
It's worth being specific about what 'your preset' actually contains, because it's more than just a stop and a target.
You can configure up to five take-profit levels (TP1 through TP5) that scale the position out in stages. Auto-breakeven can be set to trigger on any of those levels — most people use TP1, moving the stop to entry the moment the first target is hit. The trailing stop can start from TP1, TP2, TP3, or TP4, or from the moment breakeven is banked. All five levels, the breakeven trigger, and the trailing stop are all part of the preset template. The signal contributes nothing to any of them.
That's the whole point. You spend time building a risk framework that fits your account and your psychology. Then every signal you take — regardless of provider — runs inside that framework automatically.
