What Is a Focus Score and What Does It Tell You About Your Trading Discipline?
A single number is worth a thousand excuses
Most traders can tell you their win rate. Fewer can tell you whether they trade better on Tuesdays than Fridays. Almost none can tell you whether their discipline is actually improving, or just their luck. That's the gap the Focus Score fills, and it's one of the more useful things Trade By Focus surfaces automatically if you know how to read it.
The Focus Score is a 6-axis number generated from your auto-journal. It's not a P&L grade. It measures how you traded, session behaviour, adherence to your own risk rules, consistency of habit across days and pairs, and rolls that into a single figure you can track over time. How to measure trading discipline has always been the awkward question, because discipline doesn't show up cleanly on a balance sheet. You can have a great month while breaking every rule you set yourself, and a rough month while following them perfectly. The Focus Score separates those two things.
Where the number actually comes from
When you first connect a broker account to Trade By Focus, the platform auto-imports your entire closed-trade history and starts building your journal from day one. No manual logging, no spreadsheet. Every closed trade gets timestamped, session-tagged, and cross-referenced against your stated rules, things like max daily drawdown, position sizing, which pairs you're allowed to trade and when.
The Focus Score reads across six axes of that data, running a quick audit covering: did you trade at your best times, did you respect your size limits, did you stay inside your plan on high-impact news days, did you cut losses according to your rules or move stops out of spite, and did your behaviour hold steady across the week or fall apart by Thursday afternoon. Each axis gets weighted. The composite score updates after every closed trade.
I learned this the slow way, spending months convinced my edge was broken when really I was placing trades in the Asian session on a strategy that only ever worked during London. The session breakdown made that obvious in about thirty seconds.
How Smart Insights connects to it
The Focus Score on its own is a temperature reading. Smart Insights is the diagnosis.
When your score dips, Trade By Focus flags where the drag is coming from. The breakdown shows your performance by session (London (08:00-16:00 UTC), New York (13:30-21:00 UTC), Tokyo (00:00-08:00 UTC)) by symbol, and by day of week. If your gold trades on Wednesdays are dragging your score down, it shows that. If you're profitable on EURUSD during London overlap but haemorrhaging pips on the same pair during Asian session, it shows that too.
This matters because most traders have a genuinely good edge buried inside a much noisier trading habit. They take the right trades and then take ten other trades around them out of boredom or FOMO. The symbol and session breakdown in Smart Insights is what separates the signal from the noise. You might discover your only real edge is a two-hour window each morning. Everything outside it is just giving back the gains.
The day-of-week breakdown catches something specific: Friday afternoon decay. A lot of traders see their Focus Score take a hit on Friday's numbers because they're either chasing the week's losses or getting chopped up by thin, directionless markets ahead of the weekend close. Seeing it laid out by day stops it feeling like bad luck and starts it feeling like a behavioural pattern you can actually fix.
Trade Replay: going back to the scene
A Focus Score tells you that your Thursday NASDAQ trades are costing you. Trade Replay shows you why.
Select any closed trade from your journal and Trade Replay plays it back bar-by-bar, from your entry to your exit. You can scrub through at your own pace, see exactly where your stop was, watch the candles develop, notice the pin bar two hours before your stop got hit that you probably missed in real time. It's not about beating yourself up. It's about seeing what was actually there versus what you thought was there.
This is where the Focus Score becomes more than a number. A low score on session discipline might show, via Trade Replay, that you were consistently entering positions twenty minutes before the London close when volatility was compressing and the moves weren't following through. That's a specific, fixable behaviour. Much more useful than just knowing your win rate was off.
Trade Replay works on every timeframe the platform supports, M1 through to the monthly, so you can replay a scalp on the one-minute or a swing entry on the four-hour. The full indicator suite and drawing tools stay active during replay, so if you want to check where VWAP or a key Fib level sat at the time of your entry, you can.
Using the score to build an actual routine
The practical use of all this is straightforward. Check your Focus Score weekly, not daily, daily is too noisy. When the score drops, open Smart Insights and find the weakest axis. If it's session behaviour, look at which session and cross-reference with your best-performing session. Narrow your active trading to your stronger windows for a week and see if the score recovers.
If the weak axis is risk adherence, which usually means position sizing crept up, or you held through a news event you said you wouldn't, go back to the specific trades flagging red and replay them. Trade By Focus's safety guardrails (daily drawdown limits, news blackout pauses) exist partly to protect your Focus Score as much as your account, because if the platform paused you before the rogue trades happened, they wouldn't be dragging your score down in the first place.
The score also shows up in the calendar heatmap, so you can see at a glance which weeks were disciplined and which weren't, without trawling through individual trades. Green weeks start to look like a target worth hitting. It sounds simple because it is. You measure the thing, the thing improves.
