How gold reacted to the US jobs report on Friday 2 October 2026

Jobs the US added last month, outside farming. Out on the first Friday of the month. The latest figure came out at 13:30 UK time on Friday 2 October 2026: 29K, against a forecast of 52K. The previous reading was 162K.

The lowest reading since August 2026 (-23K).

Out at the same time: hourly earnings 0.1% (forecast 0.3%); the unemployment rate 4.2% (forecast 4.1%).

What gold did

In the first 15 minutes gold moved +241 pips, and over the first hour +68 pips. Four hours after the release it was -506 pips from where it started, and a day later -470 pips.

That was about a usual first hour: since May 2021, gold's first hour after payrolls has typically moved about 98 pips one way or the other, across 62 releases. It was up after 35 of them and down after 27.

When the US jobs report surprised before

This release came in about in line with the forecast.
