How to stop a winning gold trade coming all the way back

Your gold trade runs well into profit, you look away, and by the time you check again it has come all the way back. Sometimes it goes past your entry and closes at your full SL, so a winning trade ends up as a loss.

The fix is to have the stop move without you. Trade By Focus does this with break-even and a trailing stop. You set them once, and they run on the Trade By Focus servers, not on your phone.

Break-even and trailing, set once in a preset

Both live in your presets. On the chart, tap Presets, then an empty SLOT (or EDIT on a saved preset). In the preset editor you set your lot size, SL and up to five take profits, each with its own share of the position. Then set two things:

  • Move the stop to break-even at. Pick a take profit, and when it fires the stop moves to your entry price, so the rest of the trade can't turn into a loss. "Step it up at each take profit" is the cascading mode, which drags the stop up to the previous level each time another TP is hit.
  • Start the trailing stop at. Pick TP1, TP2, TP3 or TP4. From that point the stop follows price at your Trailing distance, in points.

There is also Break-even part-way to TP1: once price has gone 25%, halfway or 75% of the way from entry to TP1, the stop moves to entry. It's one break-even choice, so you pick either part-way or a take profit, never both.

Tap Create preset or Save changes, then tap the preset itself to arm it. It reads · ARMED, and every BUY or SELL on that pair uses the full setup. Until the trail starts, the chart shows a dashed trail line marked pending, naming the take profit that will set it off.

Already in a trade? Open the Manage panel on the position. From there you can move the stop to break-even at TP1, TP2, TP3, TP4 or cascading, and switch on a trailing stop at TP1 to TP4, all applied to the running trade. In the Manage panel's SL tab you can also set break-even at an exact price: a green line on the chart you drag to the level you want.

This is the whole point of a trailing stop mt5 phone setup that doesn't need you watching. You can close the app, lock the phone or lose Wi-Fi and the rules keep working, as long as your MT5 account shows as connected.

If you copy a VIP group, the group's settings decide. On Use my preset, your preset's break-even and trailing manage the trade. On Follow their signals exactly, the Always move the stop to break-even toggle in the group's Signal settings moves your stop at the take profit you pick, even if the group never says BE.

The edges worth knowing

Size limits what you can pick. Break-even and trailing only start at a take profit that leaves part of the trade open. A partial close needs at least 0.02 lots on gold. At 0.01, TP1 closes the whole position, so there is nothing left to trail. With only one take profit, part-way to TP1 is the only break-even on offer. Choices that can't fire aren't shown, and the editor tells you why.

A wide trail can start on the losing side. If your trailing distance is wider than the gap to the take profit that starts it, the trail begins below your entry on a buy (above it on a sell). With break-even at or before that TP, the stop at entry protects you until the trail catches up. Without it, the rest of the trade can still close at a loss. The editor spells this out in your own numbers.

Fills can land a few points past the level. When the stop is hit it becomes a market order, so on a fast gold move it can fill several points beyond where it was set. That is normal slippage, and the stop still did its job.

Moving the stop leaves your TPs alone. Break-even and trailing never cancel or change your TP1 to TP5 ladder.

Break-even at a price has its own rules. It never moves the stop further away or past your entry, and it isn't available on zone or ladder trades. If the broker refuses the move, it retries every 2 minutes. If price gets back to your entry first, the trade is closed there.

The connection has to stay up. If your MT5 session drops and can't reconnect, you get a push asking you to sign back in. Until you do, break-even, trailing and TP1 partials pause. A plain SL or TP already placed at the broker still triggers as normal.
